

Recent declines in fertility and immigration have slowed growth in the share of children in the population and accelerated population aging. Although much smaller in total size, the number of people ages 85 and older is projected to nearly triple from 6.7 million in 2020 to 19.0 million by 2060. Between 20, the number of older adults is projected to increase by 69 percent, from 56.0 million to 94.7 million.
